Residing in the Past: Space, Identity, and Dorm Culture at Bryn Mawr College

Introduction: Brief Overview

Official Room assignment card Bertha Szold

The room assignment card of Bertha Szold, class of 1884, signed by the Secretary of the College, Julia Cope. Even though new classes cycle in, the room assignment card reminds us how grounded certain spaces of the College are in individual memory.

Buildings are integrally tied to the identity and the happenings of a campus community. They are the sites of meaningful rituals, parodic play, and scholastic inquiry. The goal of this exhibit is to explore the tension between access to a scholarly identity for women and the social and financial cost of that access. In the exhibit, the buildings of Bryn Mawr serve as a historic lens, as well as characters in their own right.
